"The Discovery of the Strange Quark" is now in print! Trust me, it's great. Guess what's in it. Comics! Yes, that's right. And they are very funny. It's got Black Widowman, nerds, Darth Vader, a sexy robot with a perfect "cardboard box" figure - 0x78 0x6F 0x78 0x6F (that's xoxo in hexidecimal ascii codes), and pirates. No, wait, there are no pirates. But it does have Deep Blue and the Governator. It's even got some things that you've never seen before. Just click on the image to the left for all of the details.

By popular request, there is now an RSS feed for Strange Quark Comics. I don't have time to update it daily, but about once a week I'll update it with the last week or so's comics. Click on the "RSS Feed" tab above to access it.

It's been a while since I've posted any news. Sorry, I've been busy.

Very soon BYU's College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences will be posting a video highlighting the research of one student/professor. They do this every year. This year my graduate student Chris Erickson and my lab are being featured. I put together an animation of our experiment for part of our segment. I threw in Jake and Adam, and I used Ingenio's head for the nucleus of the strontium atoms. I'll post a link as soon as I find it online.

For now, I'll leave you with an animated gif of the Ingenio strontium atom. If you want to use it on your web page as a link to www.sqcomic.com, I'd be thrilled.

Happy Halloween! I hope that you've enjoyed some of my comics themed for the holiday. Tomorrow, David McKenna's Halloween wish will come true. He's been teasing my grad student Chris, claiming that the character Jake was based on him (he was not). So I joked with Chris about how funny it would be to make a Dave McKenna character. I told Dave, and he's been begging me to make a Mexican character ever since. I don't base my characters on real people, so the Mexican character I'm introducing is nothing like David. But, never-the-less, I'm sure it will make him feel immortalized in print.

The hard part was making the character's ethnicity recognizable. That's hard to do when most of your characters have heads which are just ellipsoids. So I put a soccer logo on his shirt, and had him say a couple of words in Spanish.

Oh, by the way, tell your friends about sqcomic.com. If enough people start visiting this page, uh, nothing will happen. But if I'm putting in the effort to make these comics, people might as well be enjoying them. Who knows, maybe they'll win me a Nobel Peace Prize :)

Whoops, I got behind in posting comics. It looks like they ran out yesterday, so there was no new comic today. Not to fear, I've uploaded up a bunch of new ones, and we'll be back to daily comics tomorrow. Unfortunately my supply is dwindling, and I'm not making more very fast, so I don't know how much longer I can keep posting them daily. It's funny how other things seem to take precidence over writing comics!

Thanks to everyone who so quickly gave me feedback on the updated site. I've now fixed my javascript so everything should now work with the Safari and Chrome web browsers. (The technique I was using before is plastered all over the web, and it took some digging to find out how to do things differently to make this work with Safari and Chrome. So I suspect that there are quite a few web pages that don't work with them!) I also got rid of the ''bookmark'' buttons. It was inconsistent across browsers, and I think you probably all know how to bookmark things on your own. Boy, internet standards need to be standardized!

Please let me know if there are any further problems. I have personally tested this page (but only briefly) using:

  • Firefox 3.0.14 under Linux
  • Opera 10 under Linux
  • Seamonkey 1.1.17 under Linux
  • Galeon 2.0.6 under Linux
  • Internet Explorer 6 under Linux (using Wine)
  • Internet Explorer 6 under Windows
  • Opera 10 under Windows
  • Safari 4.0.3 under Windows
  • Chrome 3 under Windows
Please let me know if you have any more problems so I can sort them out.

By the way, this was the first time I've used most of these browsers. Safari and Chrome don't run under Linux, so I don't know why anyone would use them. (Running VirtualBox just to browse the web seems extreme. You all run Linux, right? :) ). Several years ago I was impressed with how much more I liked Firefox than Internet Explorer, and I've been using Firefox ever since. But I have to say, so far I'm pretty impressed with Opera.

I've reworked the site to make it faster, sleeker, and more usable.
  • You no longer need Java to see the comics.
  • You can now navigate quickly through the archive using a pop-up calendar.
  • You can bookmark individual comics in the archive.
  • You can email links to individual comics in the archive.
  • Web pages should load faster.
  • I've extended the comic archive back to the very start of the strip.
Now you can't say I've never done anything for you. I've got a few more ideas for this page, but they will have to wait. All this web remodeling is taking up too much of my time. I need to get back to more important things. I'm still posting a new comic every day though (well, actually the computer is posting it for me).

Sept 12, 2009

I have a huge set of comics, and I'm constantly making more. So I am currently posting a new comic every day. So come back often. I'll be running my AI series soon - that's been a favorite of all of the family and friends that I've shown it to. Oh, and tell your friends about this page.
